Overcoming Anxiety When Joining A Gym

If the thought of joining a gym feels overwhelming or intimidating, you’re not alone. A lot of us worry about being judged, unfamiliarity with gym equipment, or being self-conscious about our fitness abilities, but don’t let your nerves take over!
Gym anxiety is common, and we’ve got some tips on how you can overcome it.
Make A Plan
Uncertainties can be scary, but a plan will help.
Define Goals: Figure out what you want to achieve by joining a gym, which parts of your body you’d like to work on and what equipment you’d like to try.
Do Your Research: Research gyms around your area or workplace. Find one that suits your needs and budget. Consider equipment available, opening ours and membership fees.
Choose A Time: If judgement is what you’re scared of, visit the gym during off-peak hours when less people are around. The less crowded the better – you’ll feel more confident in being able to take your time.
Design A Workout Routine: Create a beginner-friendly workout regime that includes exercises that align with your goals. Plan the duration, intensity and frequency of your workouts.
If you’re having trouble making a workout routine for yourself, have a look online, there are plenty of videos and fitness apps to help you create a beginner-friendly routine. Plus the gym staff are usually a big help.
You could learn a thing or two from Netflix and Nike too!
Observe Others
Gym equipment can be daunting, but most machines look more complex than they are! Observing other gym-goers can be a great way to familiarise yourself with equipment. For example, do a slow walk on the treadmill or some stretches, and have a look around the room, observe people using equipment you’re interested in, it will help you learn proper form and the basics of the machine.
It might just boost your confidence and motivation too!
What To Remember
People are there for themselves. This is not to say other gym-goers won’t support or encourage you! Think about it: you’re going to the gym to better yourself, and that’s exactly what everyone else is doing. Other people are going to be focused on their own workouts and goals, not yours!
